I confess,
Love Actually is one of my favorite movies. I know it's cheesy and sappy and some of the stories really drag (I would happily watch a version with Kris Marshall edited out), but it's sweet and funny and it has an incredible cast. Who could have guessed that my favorite storyline would be the one featuring the guy I don't like? I've never been into Colin Firth - there's something about his teeth that really bugs me - but he won me over in this film (and much more so in
A Single Man). The slowly developing relationship between Jamie and his housekeeper Aurelia culminates in this, my favorite scene, when he confronts her in the restaurant where she works.
Jamie first meets Aurelia's father and sister, who direct him to the restaurant. Along the way, they pick up a huge crowd of people who want to see what happens. I swear, my grinchy heart grows three sizes every time I see Jamie leading the crowd down the street and the music soars. But, the sappiness is undercut with some really funny dialogue, particularly in Jamie's big speech. What can I say, I find mistranslations hilarious. It's a sweetly goofy ending to an understated love story, and sometimes even cynics like me need a little romance.
