Friday Round-Up

Another slow week for film watching. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed A Fistful of Dollars. I can't say I'm a huge fan of westerns, but I liked the pacing and excitement of this one. I really liked the guy who played the baddie - Wikipedia tells me he was called Ramon and was played by Gian Maria Volonté. I love bad guys, and he has a great, expressive face. I see that he's also in For a Few Dollars More, so I'm looking forward to that. And Clint Eastwood, so handsome. What a great head of hair he had. Anyway, I have the other two movies in the trilogy saved to my Tivo, so I'll be watching those soon.

Cemetery Junction was a little disappointing. I'm a huge fan of Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant, so I was looking forward to seeing it. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I don't think it actually came out in theaters in this country. I can't say I'm surprised. I don't think it would have played particularly well. It's a simple coming-of-age story, which is fine, but I expected more. Gervais & Merchant are extremely funny, but the film wasn't - it was mildly amusing in places - and as a drama, it wasn't particularly original. Kind of a bummer. Not that I hated it. I thought the cast, particularly Tom Hughes (and David Earl as Brian), were very likable, although there was some majorly wasted talent: Emily Watson and Ralph Fiennes for sure, but also Burn Gorman (what exactly was his purpose?) and the brilliant Julia Davis. I think it's one of those movies that you watch, kind of enjoy, then never think of again.
