Trailer Thursday: The Winning Season

There are three trailers I want to talk about this week, so I'll get to the one above later. First, The Company Men: this is the second Ben Affleck trailer that's really impressed me recently, which is unbelievable because I consider him to be the least likable actor around. I can't resist a Boston accent though, and this film has a pretty great supporting cast - it's always nice to see Kevin Costner.  Second, Skyline: man, this trailer is all about Stephen Hawking, huh? I started to wonder if he actually stars in the film (I don't think so?). How weird to focus the whole trailer on him - I mean, you can't find any other expert who said the same thing? The effects shots look OK, but I'm not super impressed.

So my actual pick this week is The Winning Season. Not because I think it's a great trailer - I don't - but because I'm really optimistic about this film. I love Sam Rockwell, particularly in comedies, and he looks good in this one (love the mustache). Now, the reason I say I'm optimistic is that the trailer isn't actually that funny. If these are the best jokes, we're in trouble, but my hunch is that the film is more of a sleeper like Napoleon Dynamite. I don't remember ever seeing that trailer back in 2004, but I just watched it and it didn't inspire a lot of confidence. But whatever you might think of it now, after the endless pop culture saturation, Napoleon Dynamite was a ridiculously funny movie. That's what I'm hoping we have here. Besides, Sam Rockwell knows how to pick a good project, so I trust his judgment (don't think about G-Force).
