Well, this is awkward. Somehow, I only watched one film this week, and it was Showgirls. I didn't like it, but not for any of the reasons I expected. The acting wasn't as terrible as I anticipated, and the film didn't look cheap. I mean, it was very well designed, even though it was tacky as hell. It had an OK plot, and it even had kind of a twist at the end. I think I just found it boring. It was kind of slow and vague about a lot of things. I couldn't really follow the passage of time - everything that happened in the film seemed like it took place over a year or so, but the part at the end with the guy in the truck doesn't really fit that timeline. I doubt he would have remembered her unless she was the only person he ever robbed. Also, no matter how much the script tried to suggest otherwise, Nomi was a terrible dancer. So I guess my final verdict is it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I still didn't like it. Bonus points for casting Tyce Diorio as one of the Goddess dancers.
I had meant to make one more point yesterday - I saw the I'm Still Here trailer, and now I'm pretty sure the poster is a weird anomaly. I think the trailer had it exactly right: it looked vaguely (but not genuinely) gritty, showed some of the familiar elements of the story but also introduced some intriguing new scenes (I'm interested to see what happens in the church, and yay, DIDDY!) but also made it look fun. The poster design is too twee for this story - he's a "rapper," not a shoegazer - but I think the trailer is back on the right marketing track.
Finally, if this week is any indication of how the next few months will pan out, I think my daily features need to be tweaked. Next week will be the last regularly scheduled Friday Round-Up - I'll do it maybe every other week after that. Who knows, it may have to stretch to every month, depending on how much time grad school takes up/how few movies I'm able to watch. It doesn't look good for Top 5 Tuesday, either. Tuesday will be my busiest day, and I was having trouble with that feature anyway. So Monday, Wednesday and Thursday will/should stay the same, and I'll see how the rest works out.
